Take a Bite Out of Global Warming

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE:

April 6, 2010: SB1241 passed the Senate Food and Agriculture Committee and was referred to the Environmental Quality Committee.  The next hearing will be in Sacramento on April 19, 2010.

In February 2010, Senator Lois Wolk of California (D-Yolo) introduced SB 1241, the Agriculture Climate Benefits Act, which designates that a portion of the revenue generated from federal or state climate change initiatives support California research and technical assistance for voluntary greenhouse gas emissions reductions in agriculture.  The legislation aims to designate funds for agriculture for research and demonstration, technical assistance and financial incentives for California farmers and ranchers to use practices, technologies and farming systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or sequester carbon.California agriculture is uniquely vulnerable to climate change impacts because of its high concentration of perennial crops including wine grapes, nuts and fruits as well as its potential for drier conditions, more extreme weather events and rising temperatures.  At the same time, agriculture can provide climate change solutions by reducing emissions in farm equipment, energy efficiency, renewable energy production and on-farm management practices. To make these solutions possible, farmers need resources, information and financial incentives to be able to adapt their practices.  SB 1241 will help to provide the resources necessary to make such practices a reality. A complete copy of SB 1241 can be found at:
