Also known as aquaculture, farmed seafood refers to seafood that has been produced in open-water net pens, land-locked ponds and fully enclosed land-based systems. This type of seafood production uses massive amounts of fossil-fuels for constructing pens, capturing and shipping fish to feed carnivorous farmed fish (such as salmon), and the manufacture of industrial drugs and chemicals used to prevent and treat the spread of disease among caged fishes.
